Ashok Desai, a renowned advocate
and former Attorney General of India, passed away in 2020 at the age of 87. His
career was marked by his exceptional legal acumen, scholarly contributions and

Born on December 24, 1932, in
Nagpur, Maharashtra, Desai pursued his education at the University of
Cambridge, where he earned a degree in law. He was called to the bar at
Lincoln’s Inn in 1956 and returned to India to practice law. His early career
saw him taking on a variety of cases, quickly establishing himself as a skilled
and knowledgeable advocate.
Desai’s legal career was
distinguished by his involvement in several high-profile cases. He was appointed
Solicitor General of India in 1989 and served as Attorney General of India from
1996 to 1998. During his tenure, he argued numerous landmark cases before the
Supreme Court, including the famous Vineet Narain case, which led to
significant reforms in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the
enforcement of anti-corruption measures.
In addition to his courtroom
achievements, Desai was a prolific writer and scholar. He authored several
books and articles on various aspects of law, including constitutional law,
administrative law and human rights. His writings provided deep insights into
